UNCTAD is invited to participate in the 15th annual Oxford Forum for International Development under the main theme of Aurora: Redefining Progress and Navigating Transition.

The international community now has a unique opportunity to rethink, to reshape - to rebuild. And it is this very process of “building back better” that lies at the crux of international development. A conversation, dominated by considerations of traditional metrics such as GDP, inflation and trade balances, is challenged by the stark picture of global realignment.

UNCTAD is contributing to the Panel “ The Power of the Lens: Creativity and Innovation in International Development” to discuss the role of creativity, photography, filmmaking and mediums like social media in bringing focus to humanitarian, ecological and development issues. It will discuss the power of creativity through the lens to move people, inspire social action and its role in building a better future. Furthermore, it will reflect on the creative industry as part of the wider global economy and the importance of growth and support in this sector to aid development.

Background

The Forum offers a critical examination of where we are and what has come to an end, and questions the classical approach to international development. Reflecting on our goals and vision, we may move beyond change to newly understand sustainability, collaboration and impassioned change. We must redefine progress.

From this transitional point, there is a monumental opportunity to advance development efforts. International development has to change, and it needs to manage transformation in attitudes, institutions and beyond. With that in mind,  multidimensional priorities and multifaceted efforts to address sustainability and inclusion are needed.

The Forum will examine not only what international development is, but how it can be improved to match the changing needs of our international community. With this in mind, Aurora: Redefining Progress and Navigating transition hosts an impressive array of speakers, featuring innovative panel topics aimed at examining and improving economic, human and environmental spheres of international development.
