UNCTAD in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy of Guatemala and CentraRSE organized a meeting to Present the National Action Plan for Guatemala towards developing high quality sustainability/SDG reporting by companies. The Action Plan is one of the key outputs of the Development Account 11th Tranche Project titled Enabling policy frameworks for enterprise sustainability and SDG reporting in Africa and Latin America. The meeting took place virtually on 16 July 2021 and a meeting to allow to provide additional comments after the presentation of the Action Plan was held on 23 July 2021.

The action plan provided recommendations and proposed activities and changes to overcome the gaps on priority areas identified with the previous assessment exercise and agreed at the national consultative workshop. The meeting encouraged participants to discuss and provide their views on the suggestions. It has paved the way to improve the sustainability/SDG reporting infrastructure in Guatemala and enhance the quality of corporate reporting, including on environmental, social and corporate governance aspects.

Opening the meeting, Richard Bolwijn, Officer in charge of Enterprise Branch of UNCTAD, highlighted a series of recent international developments that are changing drastically the sustainability reporting landscape and stressing the urgency and importance of transparent measurement and disclosure, as well as of comparability and reliability of sustainability information. He further stated that in this context, this Development Account project is more relevant than ever, as its main objective is to enable governments to develop policy frameworks on the SDG reporting by companies to strengthen the capacities to measure and monitor the contribution of the private sector to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The meeting was attended by 62 participants from 29 key entities, including institutions in charge of the implementation of the SDGs and entities involved in financial and sustainability/SDG reporting at the national level.

UNCTAD is working jointly with the Ministry of Economy and CentraRSE to create a steering committee in charge of implementing the action plan.

In addition, a regional workshop in Latin America will be held at the beginning October to share good practices and lessons learned and promote the creation of a regional partnership to foster collaboration and facilitate quality and comparability of data on the private sector contribution to the SDGs.
