Background
As part of its mandate, UNCTAD has recently developed a composite Productive Capacities Index (PCI) to address the need for data and statistics as important input to policies aimed at fostering productive capacities. Productive capacities, defined as the “productive resources, entrepreneurial capabilities and production linkages which together determine the capacity of a country to produce goods and services and enable it to grow and develop”, are the catalyst for structural change.
On this note, the training is intended to expose participants to the latest data collection, organization, aggregation methodologies and techniques, and focuses on the pointwise estimation of productive capacities.
Objectives
The specific objectives of the workshop are to:
- To train national statistical experts to compute the country-specific PCI;
- To expose national statisticians to UNCTAD’s Productive Capacities Index (PCI);
- To enhance the capacity of national statistical experts to regularly compute and update the PCI using UNCTAD’s methodology; and
- To explore how the PCI can be used in national policy-making processes.
