Two back-to-back intensive training workshops will be conducted on 7-9 and 12-15 September, based on a tailor-made training module on trade safeguards, prepared by UNCTAD.
The workshops will address specifically legal and technical challenges associated with the development and implementation of trade safeguard measures and trade remedies in general faced by Mozambique; a nation classified as a least developed country (LDC) suffering from weak institutional frameworks and lack of human resources capacity and expertise.
Participants will be introduced to key concepts, principles, and WTO disciplines governing trade remedies through a series of lectures, PowerPoint presentations, and case laws exercises, thus allowing them to have a better understanding of the scope, objective, and the implications of trade defense tools (trade remedies) for their country’s trade and development perspective.
The objective is to provide technical support to Mozambican officials to build human and institutional capacity in the area of trade safeguards with the aim of enabling the government to establish a legal system on trade remedies consistent with Mozambique’s international trade obligations including in particular under WTO agreements and relevant SADC- EU Partnership Agreement (EPA) provisions.
The training sessions will be attended by some 20 officials representing public and private entities, including: the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC), Investment and Export Promotion Agency of Mozambique, Commercial Institute of Maputo (ICM), the Industrial Association of Mozambique (AIMO), Mozambican Competition Regulatory Authority, National Institute of Standardization and Quality, Chamber of Commerce of Mozambique, and the Mozambican Tax Authority.
