ISO 50001 energy management systems to promote sustainable practices and

energy efficiency in African ports

As part of the UNCTAD project “Sustainable Smart Ports for African Countries” UNCTAD, ISO and representatives from ports of Tanger Med (Morocco), Port Louis (Mauritius), and Tema (Ghana), along with local stakeholders and ISO experts, will convene on 29 and 30 October 2024 for an online training on the ISO 50001 standard to learn about ways to enhance energy efficiency in ports.

This training aims to strengthen capacity of ports and local relevant stakeholders in the development and implementation of energy management systems in accordance with ISO 50001, thereby fostering sustainable energy practices and improving energy efficiency.

Concretely, this event will help ports to:

  1. Increase understanding of ISO 50001 and its benefits, including energy cost reduction, greenhouse gas emissions minimization.
  2. Provide detailed knowledge about the requirements and characteristics of ISO 50001, focusing on its applicability to port operations.
  3. Equip stakeholders with practical insights into developing and implementing a Port Energy Management Plan (PEMP) in accordance with ISO 50001 guidelines.
  4. Emphasize the importance of stakeholder collaboration and data requirements for successful ISO 50001 implementation.

The virtual awareness-raising session will have a duration of six hours (2 days of 3 hours), facilitated by ISO experts:

  • On Day 1 (29 October), the session will introduce ISO 50001, covering its requirements and benefits of implementing it in port operations while highlighting the critical role of people and management as key success factors.
  • On Day 2 (30 October), the session will focus on technical indicators of energy performance management, using practical examples and real data from the ports present.

Key stakeholders participating in these dialogues include, among others, the Mauritius Port Authority, Tanger Med Port Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Mauritius Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, cargo handling operators, electricity providers, and terminal operators and representatives from ISO National Standard bodies.

By invitation only, this activity is limited to a specific number of participants.
