11:00 - 21:00 hrs. The World Trade Organization (WTO)
Geneva

A global celebration of cotton and its stakeholders, from field to fabric and beyond

IMG-20190530-WA0008.jpgOn 7 October, the WTO will host the first World Cotton Day (WCD) in Geneva. The WTO Secretariat is organizing the event in collaboration with the Secretariats of FAO, UNCTAD, ITC and ICAC. This event stems from the application by the Cotton-4 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali) to the United Nations General Assembly for its official recognition of a World Cotton Day, reflecting the importance of cotton as a global commodity.

World Cotton Day will be celebrated in countries across the globe, with events giving exposure to farmers, processors, researchers and businesses and their contributions to the cotton value chain. These specific activities will be organized at the country level and livestreamed at the WTO Headquarters.

UNCTAD supports World Cotton Day as an important opportunity to celebrate the contribution of cotton stakeholders to economic development. Through its involvement, UNCTAD aims to complement the ongoing assistance it delivers to developing countries to increase the benefits they earn from the production and trade of cotton. Recent assistance on cotton includes the Pan-African Cotton Road Map and a projects on Promoting cotton by-products in Eastern and Southern Africa.
