First Stakeholders Steering Committee Meeting for BioTrade

17 May 2018
11:00 - 08:00 hrs. Room XV, Palais des Nations
Geneva
, Switzerland

Objective

The first Stakeholders Steering Committee (SSC) aims to bring together BioTrade partners under a common platform to promote collaboration, further coordinate actions and enhance its knowledge and understanding of the linkages between BioTrade, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Aichi Targets. Partners will enrich the discussions by sharing their expertise, experiences, and lessons learned from their BioTrade-related activities.

Background

The programme UNCTAD BioTrade Initiative - Linking trade, biodiversity and sustainable development was launched in March 2018 with the financial support of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO. The 4-year programme will be implemented by UNCTAD by steering, managing and actively collaborating with partners and other stakeholders. Programme activities aim to contribute to achieving the SDGs, particularly SDGs 15 and 17, as well as the Aichi Targets.

The SSC will take place on 17 May 2018 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. It will bring together partners implementing BioTrade at the national, regional and international levels. During the meeting, the members will collaboratively define, discuss, agree, and adopt a four-year work plan, known as the Roadmap. They will also identify emerging areas for future partnerships. Similarly, the Roadmap will compile additional activities implemented by other BioTrade stakeholders, aiming to identify future partnerships and collaboration.

Programme partners include: CITES Secretariat, Development Bank for Latin America (CAF), Forum for Law, Environment, Development and Governance (FLEDGE), GIZ ABS Initiative, Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation, International Trade Centre (UNCTAD/WTO), PhytoTrade Africa Network, Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO), Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), and national BioTrade programmes.

BioTrade refers to those activities of collection, production, transformation, and commercialization of goods and services derived from native biodiversity under the criteria of environmental, social and economic sustainability. Since its launch in 1996 by UNCTAD, the BioTrade Initiative promotes sustainable trade in support of the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) as well as other multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and the SDGs.
